LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — The Chicago Bears will wait until game time to announce their starting quarterback for Sunday’s game against Detroit, choosing between Andy Dalton and rookie Justin Fields. Both quarterbacks are dealing with injuries, but Fields has been able to go through full practices the entire week while Dalton has been limited every day. Dalton is suffering from a bone bruise to his left knee while Fields wore a brace on his injured right hand all week in practice.
CHICAGO (AP) — Lance Lynn pitched one-run ball over five innings, José Abreu homered and drove in four runs, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 8-1 for their fifth straight win. Tim Anderson added four hits for the AL Central champions as they prepare for next week’s Division Series against the Houston Astros. Chicago pulled within a game of the Astros for home-field advantage after Houston lost to Oakland. Lynn earned his first win since July 25, giving up four hits and one walk while striking out four. The White Sox right-hander had lost three of his previous four starts.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Paul Goldschmidt hit a walk-off RBI single in the ninth inning, and the playoff-bound St. Louis Cardinals won for the 19th time in their last 20 games, 4-3 over the Chicago Cubs. Tyler O’Neill homered twice and threw out the potential go-ahead run in the ninth inning for the Cardinals, who will play either the Los Angeles Dodgers or the San Francisco Giants in the NL wild-card game. Dakota Hudson made his first start for the Cardinals in more than a year, allowing three hits in five scoreless innings. Hudson is returning from Tommy John surgery and worked in relief in his season debut on Sept. 24.
CHICAGO (AP) — Ons Jabeur continued her career season by beating top-seeded Elina Svitolina 6-4, 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the Chicago Fall Tennis Classic. Jabeur came in ranked a career-best 16th but was 0-3 against Svitolina. The Tunisian player is hoping to become the first Arab to qualify for the WTA Finals, which will be held next month in Guadalajara, Mexico. Jabeur will face Elena Rybakina in the semifinals. Rybakina was leading Belinda Bencic when the Olympic gold medalist retired with a right knee injury. In the other quarterfinals, Garbiñe Muguruza beat qualifier Mai Hontama in straight sets and Marketa Vondrousova outlasted Danielle Collins in a 2 1/2-hour match.
UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) — The WNBA semifinal playoff series are knotted at a game apiece and both could go the full five games based on the historic and gritty performances thus far. Diana Taurasi and the Phoenix Mercury put on a shooting clinic as they scored the most points in a regulation playoff game in the league’s 25-year history in their win over Las Vegas on Thursday night. Eight months after having surgery to repair a torn Achilles’ tendon, Alyssa Thomas provided a spark for the Connecticut Sun in a victory over the Chicago Sky. Both series are now tied at 1-1 and play will shift to Chicago and Phoenix, respectively, for the next set of games that tip off on Sunday.
LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — The Chicago Bears look to pick themselves up when they host the winless Detroit Lions on Sunday in a matchup between teams coming off losses that were gut wrenching for different reasons. Chicago’s offense failed in a 26-6 debacle at Cleveland. The Bears ran 42 plays for a grand total of 47 yards. It was the ninth-lowest total by an NFL team and the second worst for the charter franchise. It wasn’t clear who will start at quarterback with Andy Dalton and rookie Justin Fields banged up. The Lions are also reeling after losing 19-17 to Baltimore on a NFL-record 66-yard field goal by Justin Tucker.
