The state has awarded about $90 million to eight health care provider groups that have plans to transform in an evolving industry.

With the goal of helping hospitals and clinics improve patient outcomes and reduce health disparities, the state and federal money is part of the $150 million Healthcare & Hospital Transformation plan that Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed into law in March.

The projects selected for the first funding round—which represents about 60 percent of the pot—aim to expand health care access on Chicago’s South and West sides, among other areas. Recipients include large health systems, safety-net hospitals, community health centers, insurance companies and community-based organizations. Six of the eight selected groups include Chicago-area providers.

“The collaboratives receiving funding in this first round demonstrated real, innovative visions and presented solutions that also address social determinants of health which heavily impact health outcomes,” Theresa Eagleson, director of the state’s Department of Healthcare & Family Services, said in a press release.

Projects were prioritized if they included safety-net hospitals that serve large numbers of low-income patients, critical access hospitals in rural areas and minority- and women-owned organizations, the statement says. Projects that aim to improve specialty care or develop the workforce in underserved communities also got priority.

The money is being doled out more than a year after lawmakers approved revisions to the state’s hospital assessment program but declined to allocate the money set aside for “health care transformation,” an industrywide move toward cost-efficient outpatient care and preventive services. The decision to hold off was partly due to some elected officials expressing concern about the now-dead merger of four South Side hospitals, which had banked on a significant portion of the pot.

One of those hospitals, Mercy Hospital & Medical Center, has since been taken over by new leaders and renamed Insight Hospital & Medical Center. The other three—Advocate Trinity Hospital, South Shore Hospital and St. Bernard Hospital—are part of the South Side collaborative selected by the state during this funding round.

The state didn’t immediately provide the specific amounts being awarded to these eight provider groups, whose names link to their applications for funding:
