Target opened a new store this week in River North, days after news surfaced that the retailer is backing off a move onto the Magnificent Mile.
The grand opening is Sunday for the new store, 630 N. LaSalle Drive, but it quietly opened this week.
The store is 17,000 square feet and is considered one of Target’s small-format stores. The location is Target’s 87th in the Chicago area, with 15 of them small-format stores, according to the company.
The River North outpost joins nearby downtown Target locations in Streeterville and the Loop. The Minneapolis-based retailer had been mulling a move into Water Tower Place on North Michigan Avenue. That deal would have filled at least part of the 324,000-square-foot hole left by Macy’s, the mall’s biggest tenant. But the prospect of a Target in the mall also received some backlash.
The new River North Target will offer in-store pickup and will have a Starbucks.
This story has been updated to correct that the River North store does not have drive-up or same-day delivery service.
