The University of South Alabama community is hours away from hearing the short list of candidates to be the school’s fourth president, following a trustee meeting Tuesday.
Tony Waldrop announced his imminent retirement in February and John W. Smith has served as acting president since April. On Tuesday the USA Board of Trustees held a special meeting to review the list of candidates presented by a search committee.
Most of that meeting consisted of an executive session that ran for more than an hour. Afterward Jimmy Shumock, chair pro tempore of the board, called for a vote on the list, which the board approved without opposition.
The catch: The list was not immediately made public. “There will be a lot more information in the next 24 hours,” said Shumock.
In response to a question from a participant, Shumock seemed to suggest that the executive session had left an unanswered question, or possibly that time was needed to notify the candidates on the list.
“It will be listed in the next 24 hours,” he said. “We’re making one more final check to make sure all is good and then we’re going to go ahead. We don’t want to get out ahead of any one particular individual or another and make sure they’re all good.”
“It’ll be very public when it becomes public,” said Shumock. “You’ll know who they are, I promise.”
